Position Summary

As an academic medical center with a rich history of providing life-saving treatment in Southern Nevada, UMC serves as the anchor hospital of the Las Vegas Medical District, offering Nevada's highest level of care to promote successful medical outcomes for patients.
We are home to Nevada's ONLY Level I Trauma Center, Designated Pediatric Trauma Center, Burn Care Center, and Transplant Center. We are a Pathway Designated facility by ANCC, and we are on our journey to Magnet status.
Position Summary:
Screens calls and visitors; type and compose correspondence, departmental reports and documents; maintain calendars; coordinate events and meetings; and, maintain employee files in a variety of departments within UMC.

Job Requirement

Education/Experience:
Equivalent to graduation from high school and two (2) years of clerical experience.
Licensing/Certification Requirements:
Some positions may require Notary Public Certification.

Additional and/or Preferred Position Requirements

Knowledge of medical terminology and prior work experience with timekeeping. Expert skill level in all Microsoft Office Products, i.e. MS Outlook, Word, Excel, Project, Powerpoint, Access, Publisher, and Visio. The successful candidate may be required to pass an aptitude test.
In addition:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of secretarial experience supporting a specialty surgical practice
  • Proficiency with MS Office
  • Experience with Agendas and Minutes
  • Comfortable working on multiple projects at a time.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Physical Requirements

Knowledge of:
Office theories and principles; telephone etiquette; confidential requirements; department and hospital safety practices and principles; patient rights; infection control policies and practices; handling, storage, use and disposal of hazardous materials; department and hospital emergency response policies and procedures.
Skill in:
Applying customer service techniques; coordinating events and special functions; creating and maintaining departmental files; tracking and monitoring expenses; writing reports such as statistical and performance improvement reports; applying basic record keeping practices; using office equipment such as phones, copiers, facsimiles and adding machines; using computers and related software applications; communicating with a wide variety of people from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all personnel contacted in the course of duties; efficient, effective and safe use of equipment.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment, stamina to remain seated for extended periods of time, vision to read printed materials and a VDT screen, and hearing and speech to communicate effectively in person and over the telephone. Strength and agility to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
